Understanding Cosmology
Cosmology is a term that comes from two ancient Greek words with the simple idea of discourse on the universe and its creation. In ancient days the creation of the cosmos was satisfied with religious answers that utilized little or no testing by way of th

The astronomy pictures today are, in all fairness and deference to the past, the greatest ever taken. Improved technology has made astronomy pictures sharper, more defined, accurate, and simply put, more beautiful. However, when we think of photographs, maybe we should expand our definition.

Astronomy pictures are not confined only to the dimension of mere photographs, but go beyond this in that there are different forms of photography, some of which defy the average person's conception of the term. For instance, we all know about CAT, SCAT, and PET scans, all of which take photographs of our brains -sometimes actually making small movies showing the actual processes as they happen. For instance, the 'lighting up' of different parts of the brain as different emotions are evoked while being scanned.

The case is also well known to anyone who has seen sonograms of a fetus. This technology too, has now improved to the point that the photos are in color, more detailed, and three dimensional. Within fields like sonography and neurology the information is shared and so used with taking astronomy pictures. Nowadays we can "see" the invisible.

Through the aid of computers we can now visually portray onto paper and computer monitors x-rays, sounds, and multiple forms of invisible light -and often multiple examples of these indiscernible forms of light, all projected from stars, pulsars, quasars, and their ilk.

But what does this mean? The proof of the pudding is in the taste, they say. Nowadays everyone has seen astronomy pictures of Mars, Venus, the sun, and other celestial bodies. Yet all forms of such photography are not the same. Often, when you see a picture of say, the surface of Mars, what is often being seen is the result of a lengthy, even complex series of steps.

Simply put, a probe takes a photograph with what equates to a digital camera that must filter out extraneous features that are often captured on the photograph (equal to what happens when you're trying to study and mentally block out outside noise). The photo goes to a computer which accomplishes this and the photo is then sent to China, Japan, NASA, or whichever country or space agency owns the probe.

From here the color considerations are made for each photograph. Think of this as interior decorating for astronomy pictures. The reasons for this are simple: not only are aesthetics important, but definition -the understanding of each individual aspect of a given photograph must be identifiable for the purpose of inspection and study. We're talking million dollar photos here, after-all.

So, when speaking of astronomy pictures, remember the many facets involved. There is time, space, economics, aesthetics, pragmatics, and a near myriad of other considerations. And the true beauty of it all: a great photo taken 3 million miles away can sit on your personal desk or wall.
